July 2006

Going for a full month, we did not have tons of money, so Mom for pack the basics of kitchen goods, her spices, dry and canned goods, and few extra things that she knew the cottage did not have. Dad did not sleep well the night before so most the time he would pack the car the evening before. Mom would try to let Dad get a couple of hours of sleep before the long drive from Ohio to the Cape.

We would normally leave late and drive through the night and get to the Cape around noonish. We tried to stop once and that was a disaster as no one sleep and it was a waste of money. Even into my years of driving, we have done the same. Only now that it is just my wife and I we do try to find a place to stop over night to and from.

Personally I would rather get there and have more time for the Cape.

The fraud is an extraordinary echo of the rogue trader, Nick Leeson, who caused the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995, says BBC business correspondent Nils Blythe. But the losses uncovered by Barings bosses totalled just 860m - about a quarter of the amount lost by Societe Generale. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7206270.stm .

It's been a busy few days highlighted by Macworld and activity on the merger & acquisition front. This week on the Between the Lines podcast, Larry and I give our impressions on the latest Macworld revelations by Steve Jobs. It was clear that Jobs took great pride in the new MacBook Air, which he declared the thinnest notebook computer in the world, but who is the target customer?

We also discuss the acquisition of BEA by Oracle (not surprising), Sun's $1 billion payout for MySQL (surprising but in line with Sun's focus on open source and infrastructure), and SAP's addition of Business Objects (good move).
